[Women's Cross Country] Knights Cross Country Teams Hit the Road for First MeetsPublished by

McDowell, III, Sports Information Director September 8, 2018 KNIGHTS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HIT THE ROAD FOR FIRST MEETS ETTRICK, VIRGINIA – The St. Andrews University women's and men's cross country teams finally got to open their seasons by traveling to Virginia and crossing the Appomattox River into Ettrick to participate in the Virginia State University Fall Opener. The men's team got to ride but did not get to run due to inclement weather, and the women's team was represented in the individual competition only due to having just four runners. The team participants were host Virginia State University (1st Place Finish), Chowan University (2nd), Shaw University (3rd), Virginia Union University (4th) and Elizabeth City State University (5th). Joining the Knights in the individual competition was Washington Adventist University. Knights freshman Shawntez Mickens (FR/Winston Salem, NC) finished 11th in the individual competition by completing the 5000 meter (5K) race with a time of 26:59.4. Kyera Frank of host Virginia State University finished first with a time of 21:09.0. Following the race, Head Coach Larry Rodgers said, "Our runners did a good job for their first race of the season. They started out a little slow for the first half mile of the race but gradually picked up their pace throughout the rest of the run." The teams will travel to Cary, North Carolina next Friday, September 14th to participate in the NCSU Adidas Cross Country Challenge at Wake Med Park.
