Rock Hill, SC- The St. Andrews University men's cross country team competed in the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday morning. The team set six NEW 8,000 meter Personal Records: freshmen Eduardo Andrade (FR/Mount Holly, NC) (28:47) and Zack Castor (FR/Menifee, CA) (29:30), sophomore Martin Gutierrez (SO/Lodi, NJ) (29:07), junior Chase Kopp (JR/Bealeton, VA) (30:16), RS freshman Nigel Barnes (SO/Wilmington, NC) (30:30) and Franco Portillo (SO/Menifee, CA) (31:07). Junior Justin Brown (JR/Woodstock, GA) then ran the best collegiate cross country race of his career with a 65th place finish in 30:09. The most notable statistic of the Winthrop Invitational was the Knights 1 to 5 man split of only 1 minute and 28 seconds. Coach Cason set a goal for the team to split under 90 seconds from runner number 1 to runner number 5 and the young Knights executed the plan to perfection with 2 seconds to spare. The men also finished 4th overall out of 11 D-2 and NAIA teams landing behind just three Division II teams in Queens, Emmanuel and Benedic but beating such teams as Newberry and Belmont Abbey. The St. Andrews University men's cross country team next races Saturday, September 26th at the historic Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, NC. Read the full article at: www.sauknights.com
